Completed in 1912 Rhodes Memorial was built as a tribute to English born Cecil john Rhodes (1853 – 1902) who became a South African politician. The structure was built from Cape Granite and bronze and designed by Sir Herbert Baker.

The columns were attributed to Rhodes’s appreciation to the more classic style of architecture

There is on step for each year of his life. Only 49 when he passed. When I found out this information I went and counted on my next visit and can confirm this fact.

The eight lions of the monument were modeled from those ate the base of Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square. You will always find the visitors posing for photos on the lions back.

The Views are amazing from the monument and young and old stare over the peninsular for hours.

Many years ago they had a large herd of deer that roamed around freely and it was a big highlight for me to feed them by hand as they were so tame.

Behind the monument is a tea garden that serves awesome food and fresh homemade treats. It is pet friendly to. Well worth the visit. I have the fondest memories of sitting inside near the open log fire drinking a cup of hot chocolate and a slice of the huge chocolate cake.
