Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens is situated in the small coastal town of Betty’s Bay. The luscious green garden is extremely well maintain and has had nature throw some curved ball at her as in the floods of 2013 and the fire on New Year’s Eve 2019. One can only thank and admire the efforts of the staff who continually strive to bring the garden back to its former glory and even better.
Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens is one of the best birding sites in the area and is home to numerous species and will never let the amateureor veteran birder down. I don’t think I have ever visited the garden without stopping to chat about the birds and have often help others by pointing out the different spices or directing them to where i have just sighted the birds the looking for.
The garden offers many a trails and it is highly recommended you do them as the view from higher up in the gorges are absolutely magnificent The walk will also take you through the natural fynbosch and when the flowers are at full display you will think you in heaven
The waterfall is always a highlight but unfortunately you can only view it from a distance as the boardwalk got swept away by the flood and has yet to be repaired but I am sure they will do it as soon as funds become available. This was one of my favorite destination in the garden and listening to the sound of the water cascading down into the river below.
The Garden has a lovely tea room which served delicious meals and they also have a function venue for weddings or private parties but check with them first as covid has certainly made life difficult with strange hours and strict numbers control.
